West Covina Symphony Orchestra presents the third concert in its "Artist Series ~ Sonic Tapestries". Featuring violist, composer, conductor Sylvia Lee Mann; Oboist Richard Kravchak; Clarinetist Julia Heinen; Harpist Paul Baker, Pianist Mary Au, and percussionist Laura Bilodeau.

The West Covina Symphony Orchestra presents the third concert in its "Artist Series ~ Sonic Tapestries". A very special new series of 4 intimate concerts featuring the very best in Chamber Music and Solo Performance.

This third concert in the series features violist, composer, conductor Sylvia Lee Mann; Oboist Richard Kravchak; Clarinetist Julia Heinen; Harpist Paul Baker, Pianist Mary Au, and percussionist Laura Bilodeau.

The program includes the "Kegelstatt" Trio K.498 for Clarinet, Viola and Piano, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; "Two Rhapsodies for Oboe, Viola and Piano by Charles Martin Loeffler;"Doppler Effect" by Adrienne Albert; "Suite for Viola and Orchestra" (Piano), part I, by Ralph Vaughan Williams; "The Goda Suite" for Harp, Viola, Oboe and Percussion, by Sylvia Lee Mann; and Paul Baker (Harp) will perform some selections from his award-winning album, "The Quiet Path".

The West Covina Symphony Orchestra Announces the 2010 YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITION - APRIL 10, 2010

Compete on Satuday April 10, 2010 (note: 15 minute selection time limit - any one movement from the standard concerto repertoire - more details in the packet). The auditions will be held in the Recital Hall of LaCorte Hall on the CSU Dominguez Hills campus. Specific audition times will be assigned for each candidate.

Winner performs with the Symphony on June 6th, 2010 at Haugh Performing Arts Center (Citrus College) for our "Winners Concert".  Cash award will be presented at the concert.

Some of the specifics (read ALL the rules by clicking above on the poster pic for the complete packet and application form):

Eligibility: The West Covina Symphony Young Artist Competition is open to student musicians through the twelfth grade residing in and attending school in the United States. Categories are strings, brass, percussion and piano. Applicants are eligible to enter in one category only.  First place winners of previous 2 years are not eligible to compete. The winner must be available for rehearsals and publicity as required.  The winner is to provide the Symphony with a publicity photo and biography of not more than 500 words.  Applicants must submit the official application form, properly signed, (also signed by the applicant's parent if applicant is under the age of 18.). Entry fee is $50, non-refundable. All entrants must perform with live accompaniment. Entrants are encouraged to provide their own accompanist. A limited number of assigned accompanists are available for an additional $100 non-refundable fee.

Performance/Prizes: Winner will perform as a soloist at the June 6, 2010 concert. Winner will also attend the final three rehearsals prior to the concert performance. A $300 First Place Award will be presented at the final concert. If a second place winner is selected for performance, they will also attend the rehearsals and they will receive a $150 cash award. Third place winner, if selected, will receive a $100 cash award.

Judges Decision: The decision of the judges shall be final. If, in the opinion of the judges, the quality of performance at the auditions is not at a sufficiently high level, they may recommend that no award be given this year.

A $50 non-refundable application fee is required for all applications. (An additional $100 fee is required if the entrant requires the symphony to provide the accompanist for the entrant.)
