Heritage Suite, by Sylvia Lee Mann

A Celebration indeed: a journey of many sounds, many cultures. We stem from many lands and our diversity is without measure. The Heritage suite is a melding of songs and dances from many of the lands of our ancestors. There are songs of freedom, songs of joy, songs of struggle and of heroes.

All of these and more form the music of our lives and cultures. “Heritage Suite” gives us but small tastes of flavors from many lands.  Beginning with haunting “Cherokee Morning Song” of the Native Americans through songs and dances of the Scandinavians, we continue with music from Western and Eastern European lands. We then visit Russia and Asia, and then we hear “Des Colores” , a traditional folk-song that is well known throughout the Spanish-speaking world and the unofficial anthem for the United Farm Workers union. We finish our travels with “Oh, Freedom”, a post Civil War African American freedom song, which became a signature song of the Civil Rights movement in the United States, and eventually a song of human rights throughout the world.

Music of the Heritage Suite

Cherokee Morning Song; Schottis från haverö (Swedish dance); Loch Lomond (Scotland); Minstrel Boy (Ireland); Die Vogelhochzeit (Germany); Dubinushka (Russia); Arirang (Korea); Sakura (Japan); Molihua (Jasmine Flower - China);  Des Colores (Spain); Oh Freedom (African American Spiritual/Freedom Song)
